About Us

Welcome to UniIlorin Secondary School!

At Unilorin Secondary School, we are committed to providing a nurturing and empowering environment where students can discover and develop their unique talents. Our school blends academic excellence with personal growth, ensuring that each student thrives within a supportive community.

BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

The Unilorin Secondary School was established in 1982.  The University Council, at its meeting in November 1981, deliberated on the setting  up of a Secondary School that will primarily cater for the educational needs of the children/wards of the University staff; as well as to render the same service to the  University’s immediate community.  It was reported that the University staff were finding it very difficult to get admission for their children/wards in the then Government grant-aided Kwara State Secondary Schools.

The university therefore wanted a secondary school that would serve as a model, a center of academic excellence for staff children, as well as for children in its immediate environment.

Approval for the establishment/opening of the school was given by the then Kwara State Ministry of Education’s letter of approval PLAN/GEN/9/T/93 on the 21st of June, 1982.

THE FOUNDING FATHERS

On the 17th of May, 1982, the then Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin Late Professor Afolabi Toye, formally inaugurated the Governing Board of Unilorin Secondary School headed by Professor M. O. Olofintoba with specific terms and objectives.  The terms of reference included:

  1. To be responsible for guiding the Board policies of the school, supporting its development and maintaining its founding policies and character.
  2. To  be responsible for the proper management and control of the financial affairs of the school.
  3. To appoint and if need be, remove, after due process, the principal and any other member of staff of the school
  4. To fix and if need be, review the salaries and conditions of service of the school staff

It is pertinent to note that the school authority has kept strictly to the noble objectives and has no plan or intention to deviate from it.

In order to further enhance the noble objectives of USS, the school accepted the motto submitted by its first head boy, Mr. Kunle Oyeyemi.  The motto, which interprets the school’s objectives adequately is:- “Hard work, Discipline and Progress”.

Also, in addition to the motto, one of the teachers Mr. Tony Laleye composed the School Anthem.  The first line says “My School I love to remember you daily” and the last line, a prayer – “God bless Unilorin Secondary School, and make it grow from strength to strength” (2x).

However, due to strict adherence of the University of Ilorin to the Federal Government’s directive on non-funding of Recurrent Expenditure of University Secondary Schools, a Governing Board, was appointed by the University to take over the management of the school; thereby separating the school from the main stream of the University. This, thus turned the school into a private school, with its proprietor being the University of Ilorin, that appoints a Governing Board headed by the Vice Chancellor (Management Services).

THE GOVERNING BOARD

The Governing Board members of the school, consists of eminent and seasoned educationists and administrators, who, with an eagle eye, oversee, directs, advises and guides the school authority; bids to ensure a sustained academic and non-academic excellence of the students of the school.
